Knitting Wardrobe Malfunction

I am beginning to think that knitting, in general, may be my Craftfail.  This is the project I started working on after the scarf mishap.  I was so excited about this pattern I swatched, I never swatch!  My gauge was perfect, I started knitting and was obsessed, knitting in every free moment, trying not to lose momentum on this project.  Finally the day came when I could try it on to get an idea of how AWESOME it was going to be…mantelet fail…well, it’s pretty tight.  It’s not supposed to be tight, it’s uncomfortably tight (notice how the stitches are stretched)…not even if it stretches out a bit will this work.  Sigh, digging out the measuring tape.  Well, there’s the problem,  the pattern says that an extra large fits a 13” to 13 1/2” bicep and my bicep is 14 1/2”!  Yep, that explains it.
I will have to frog the whole thing, sigh, almost 2 weeks worth of knitting because, while I measured my chest, I did not measure my bicep, who knew that would be what wouldn’t fit?  The chest could stand to be a bit bigger too, I don’t want some sort of upside down muffin top going on under that cape.
The shaping on the pattern is beautiful.  I am always amazed at how knitting can be shaped around curves just from increasing and decreasing.  I still love the pattern, but I may need to take a break from it and pout about my mistake.  I will also need to sit down and do some math to get this pattern to fit, ugh, math.

If someone told me I would need math to do art, I would have paid more attention in math class than doodling in the margins of my notebook

:) Luckily it is just simple math, a little adding maybe some multiplying or dividing, I can handle it. If I needed to do any advanced math I would be in trouble too.

I hate that about sewing,too--nothing ever fits me right off of the pattern! I sew pretty much everything for my little girlies, because kids are just such straight little noodles that everything works, but I tend to thrift my own stuff. Except scarves. I can knit myself a scarf.

Julie, I am the same way about sewing, but this is basically just sleeves with a cape over the top. I was shocked when I discover my arms were too fat, I've never had a fitting problem with my ARMS. My only consolation is that it will look nicer since I've already knit it once before :P

my biceps have never fit one singe pattern that I have ever made. This is pretty common among patterns. So sorry it got ya down =(

I feel your pain with the arm difficulties. I've sewn all sorts of things but they never EVER fit my arms on the first, second, or third try. Even while shopping, I can't find things that fit them. They are also 14 inches (15.5 flexed!). Throw in 11.75 inch forearms, my upper half wardrobe consists of t-shirts and a few altered men's dress shirts.

Psycho Sue and marsspyder, thanks ladies, I guess I just haven't really noticed this as a problem before, however I am usually always hot, which means I wear a lot of tank tops and cap sleeves and also a lot of stretchy knits.

I have also been doing bicep curls with the baby (seriously) I think I might actually have some arm muscles now, but I WILL have to pay closer attention to the bicep measurements.
